us in ^ a Radon Pressure Chamber to Determine Cell Counting Efficiencies as a Function of Elevation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Building on previous research, which indicated that scintillation cells perform differently at different elevations (Burkhart, 2005; Eberline, 1989; George, l983), a pressure chamber has been designed which allows for the simulation of scintillation cell use at different "elevations." The pressure chamber has been constructed in such a way as to accommodate a large flexible bag that is filled with a known radon concentration. Radon is extracted from the bag into scintillation cells while the pressure chamber, and hence the flexible bag it contains, is maintained at various pressures. The most popular size scintillation cell is used for this study. The variation in counting efficiency caused by air density differences, and the resultant change in alpha particle travel distance, is similar to the 10 % error predicted in the previous theoretical study cited above (Burkhart, 2005).

Conclusion of a Multi-year Study on the Elevation Effects on Scintillation Cell Counting Efficiency Focusing on the Pylontm Model 300
This is a continuation of a study begun in 2005 when the authors first reported on the theoretical possibility of a non-trivial error in calibration of radon chambers caused by the current use of scintillation cells. The ramifications of this error are just now being felt by the radon industry as experts around the world attempt to better define radon concentration standards and insist upon mea...
متن کاملCalibration and optimization of a low cost diffusion chamber for passive separated measurements of radon and thoron in soil by Lexan PC SSNTD
Background: Separate radon and thoron measurements in soil are very important in assessment of internal exposure due to inhalation of such radioactive gases. Materials and Methods: In this study, a low cost, small size, passive diffusion chamber has been developed for simple measurement of Radon-222 and Radon-220(Thoron) gases separately in soil. The diffusion chamber consists of two films and ...
متن کاملElevation Effects on Radon Cell Counting Efficiency
Because of the change in path-length of the alpha particle as a function of air density, it has long been suspected that scintillation cells would have different counting efficiencies at different air densities (elevations), where counting efficiency is here defined as that fraction of radiation produced within the cell that is actually counted. However, except for a few isolated examples (Geor...
متن کاملMeasurement of Contemporary and Retrospective Radon Concentration in Ramsar Dwellings Using Polycarbonate Detector
The origins of radon gas are the amount of uranium decay in the soil that is released into space and through the interior gaps of buildings. Radon can enter the respiratory system and cause radiation hazards. Recently research has identified Radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. The indoor concentration of Radon progeny is mentioned as an important issue reg...
